Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. It is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Need to get a new eTA for a new passport.
A border services officer will ask to see the passport and other documents at the port of entry.
Some visitors need an eTA if
-
Visa-exempt foreign national flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport. A visa-exempt foreign national does NOT need an eTA (or a visitor visa) when arriving by car, bus, train or boat (including a cruise ship).
-
Lawful permanent residents of the U.S. and flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport
-
Citizens from select visa-required countries and travelling to Canada by air. However, will need a visitor visa (not an eTA) when arriving by car, bus, train, or boat, including a cruise ship
